Churchview Dinner

Yay!! Summer is finally HERE–my favorite season through and through. I don’t want to hear complaints about the humidity! There is nothing better than sunset at 9pm and so. much. fresh. produce. Best part of all? Time with kids. I love carving out time from work to enjoy the season with them. Pools, beaches, popsicles and long lazy days.

BUT. That doesn’t mean things are letting up! In fact, things are ramping up! 412 Food Rescue is fast moving forward and we cannot wait to release the app that will connect us all. And I have a few events planned these next two months!

Here’s the low-down:

June 20 @3PM

Sustainability Salon: Turning Waste Intro Resources

Event is FREE. Frick Park — Address on the Eventbrite link.

I will be speaking at this long-running event held by Maren Cooke and talking about 412 Food Rescue.

One (wo)man’s trash is another’s treasure.  Or, at least, useful item!  Reclaiming, reusing, redistributing, rejuvenating, salvaging, upcycling, composting…  that’s what we’re talking about at the 40th & 41st Sustainability Salons on May 2nd and June 20th.

To follow last month’s Sustainability Salon on Things, we will focus this month on Substances.  We’ll learn about ways that excess food is connected with hungry people, via 412 Food Rescue, from co-founder Leah Lizarondo, and how Jeff Newman’s Steel City Soils turns less appetizing food “waste” into fantastic soil.  Leftover hotel soap is being recycled and provided to communities in rural Cambodia where improving hygiene can make a big difference by the Eco-Soap Bank, and we’ll have founder and director Samir Lakhani here to tell us all about it.  We’ll also talk about an innovative program to make use of leftover medicines so that they can provide for those in need instead of adding to the pharmaceutical waste stream — and whether we might implement such a program here.

June 26 @7PM

Boost Fundraiser for 412 Food Rescue at Row House Cinema and Atlas Bottleworks

$25

Watch some short films on food waste and get educated on how 40% of our food goes to waste! Dan Gilman will be speaking about his support of the Linden Backpack Project (a program that 412FR redirects food to). Meet some of our top volunteers who have been rescuing food for 412FR AND get a preview of our app set to launch late summer!

Then join us for a cocktail hour with some nosh and craft beers at Atlas Bottleworks. Its sure to be a fantastic evening!

June 30 @4PM

Social Media Day

Event is FREE. Smith Brothers Agency 116 Federal St. in the North Shore

Armand Khatri from Tumblr will give a keynote and along with some other great speakers like my NEXTPittsburgh colleague Brian Conway, Ian Rosenberger of Thread, Bill Fuller of Big Burrito–I will be talking about how 412FR uses social media to create social impact. Lots of great info and fun networking at this event!

July 19 @5:30PM

Churchview Farm Dinner

$105

I’m nervous AND excited at the same time! This will be the first time I’ll be cooking a multi-course 100% plant-powered meal with PAIRINGS and I am having so much fun creating the menu. There will be guest appearances from some of my chef friends and delicious beer, wine and whiskey pairings to go with the amazing meal. A vegan cheese course by Jennifer England is not to miss. And I will be making an Asian-inspired menu including kimchi tacos with black eyed pea fritters, a caprese like you’ve never had before, tableside ramen and many more! Proceeds will benefit 412 Food Rescue! There are only a few tickets left! Get them now!
