Celebrate Local Food Month and get FREE tickets to SAVOR Pittsburgh’s Culinary Competition

September is a bittersweet month for me. The peak of harvest makes me giddy but it also signals the end of summer. I miss the long sunny days, going to the pool, smoothies and slushies, tomatoes and all manner of freshness. Having grown up where its summer all year long, winter is still tough love for me. Although I do look forward to hot scented baths, soups, stews and baking, and sloooowing down….

But let’s have the sweet trump the bitter and celebrate the coming of September by paying tribute to the farmers who work so hard to give us the fresh, delicious, sustainable food that we all enjoy so much.

I never appreciated summer so much as when I tried to pretend I was one a couple of summers ago. Barb Kline taught me everything I know about farming (and I barely scratched the tip of THAT iceberg). As I worked under the hot sun, I understood just how precious our food is and how heroic, really, our farmers are. This is another reason why I do what I do. Because it takes hard work to grow real food – especially ones grown naturally — I believe its an appropriate homage to cook it well. Its respect!

And this September, PASA’s Buy Fresh Buy Local is celebrating farmers with Local Food Month! I want us all to show our love and I want us all to eat good food!

So here’s a contest that marries both.

2 tickets to SAVOR Pittsburgh’s Culinary Competition ($130 value!) and 2 tickets to SAVOR Pittsburgh’s Great Happy Hour Competition on September 6th and September 7th!

The Culinary Competition will feature entries (that guests can sample!) from chefs at Habitat Restaurant at the Fairmont, Meat & Potatoes, Tamari, The Porch at Schenley, Verde, Savoy and MANY more. I’m proud to be one of the judges along with local food greats such as Rick Sebak, Chris Fennimore and Marlene Parrish. The Great Happy Hour will feature dishes from Alma Pan-Latin Kitchen, Nine on Nine, Verde, Tamari among others! You just can’t beat the line-up. Not only that, you get to dance the night away on the South Side!

Tell the world about your favorite farmer and/or farmer’s market! Visit your favorite farmer and/or farmer’s market between Tuesday, August 28 and Monday, September 8.

Step 1
Visit your favorite farmers’ market this week! Pittsburgh Post-Gazette published a great guide on locations and days of the region’s markets and farm stands here.

Step 2
Three ways to enter:
a. Post on The Brazen Kitchen’s Facebook Page – tell the world why you love your market and/or farmer!
b. EXTRA ENTRY POINT: Take a photo and post it on The Brazen Kitchen Facebook page OR post it on your Facebook page and tag The Brazen Kitchen (you have to Sally Field “like” The Brazen Kitchen before you can do this though!)
c. If you have a blog, post an entry on your blog (link to this page) and post a link in the comments section of this post

Step 3 (Optional but I would LOVE IT)
Extra entry – share a favorite seasonal veg recipe!

Post by midnight on Monday, September 3.
I will announce the winner (drawn randomly) on Tuesday, September 4!

There will be two winners:
One for two (2) tickets to SAVOR Pittsburgh’s Culinary Competition on September 6
One for two (2) tickets to SAVOR Pittsburgh Great Happy Hour on September 7

I’ll share your photo, comments and recipe (if you submitted one) on The Brazen Kitchen Pittsburgh Magazine post on the week of September 10th

And hopefully, you’ll let me share the demo table with you at Slow Food Pittsburgh’s Farmers at the Firehouse on September 15

If you have a blog and post an entry:

I’ll have a blogroll on The Brazen Kitchen on the week of September 10th
PASA/Buy Fresh Buy Local will include your blog in their newsletter in the Fall.

Isn’t this a great way to kick off harvest season? I think so!

Let’s shower our farmers with LOVE ☺
